Simply fabulous! “It’s less evening and more real.” – Those were the words proudly announced by Olivier Rousteing, creative director of Balmain, after the brand’s SS14 presentation. He was quite right – the collection boasted a more relaxed, casual tone than previous seasons have seen and clothes that were really rather wearable.
Watch the video below:
The first look to grace the catwalk with its presence was compiled of a suitably luxurious looking hound’s-tooth cardigan, pulled in by a belt designed with chain detailing, a signature of the house notably revived rather artfully for many of the pieces in the collection. This was coupled with a black, knee-length leather skirt that brought a sporty sense of movement to the scenario. Things continued in this vein: quilted bomber jackets and luxe denim (it apparently can exist and even be quite exquisite) exaggerated Rousteing’s masterful execution of casual and “real”. Particularly striking were the leather dungarees and pinstriped overall dress – it is fair to say that for the most part, things fell just about on the right side of caricature. Elsewhere, impressive beadwork embellished many a garment, ensuring that in the flurry of a more relaxed overall look, there was still enough glitz, glamour and pizzazz to please the Balmain girl.
