In recent years, one of the biggest surprises in the music industry for me was this white boy, nerd-faced and multi-instrumentalist. In addition to all that, He sings, writes, produces, dj´s, arranges and sound engineer (enough?!). His influences are Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, Barry White, Smokey Robinson, and several other old school of American Soul, and contemporary artists like J. Dilla and Kanye West.
In 2008 made it big all over the world with the single”Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out“. In 2009 whit “Maybe so maybe no”. The related album just came out later “A Strange Arrangement“ by Stone Throw records. Getting rave from critic by giving a new spark to Soul Music!
Last week Mayer released “Impressions”, an EP with 6 covers very well executed and whit all of his multitalented masterfully putted on tracks.
And best of all, free at the site of Stone Throw (yes, that psychotic label witch hunts open links download available of their albums)! He also tells why he chose this or that song. Take a look at the six chosen ones: “Work To Do” (Isley Brothers), “Do not Turn The Lights On ” (Chromeo), “You’ve Got The Makings Of A Lover”(The Festivals), “Fantasy Girl ” (Jon Brion), “Little Person” (Steve Salazar) and Mr. Blue Sky (Electric Light Orchestra).
I guarantee this is already one of my favorite’s playlists of the year!
