Story behind the story
Photographer Kris De Smedt and stylist Ruben Debuck researched their own old school photos to find the right ambience for this yearbook inspired shoot. Unable to find a backdrop ‘ugly’ enough, De Smedt set about making his own, using an arts and crafts spongeing technique he found out about thanks to a weird internet tutorial. For the casting, they wanted boys who could be clearly defined in different roles similar to those in The Breakfast Club. It was important that all models could act a little bit, and understood that it was more about portraying a character and not just a beauty shoot. Hair and makeup artist Gino brought along the wigs and mustaches, and all models were hoping they would get to wear long mullets and bushy mustaches. Only a few of the boys were lucky enough, but much fun was had. Boys, fire up those bunsen burners!
