Urban Musical Inspiration By Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

Well, what to say about a band made up of nine people, including 8 metal and 1 drummer?! Can you imagine?!

This band is the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, a Chicago native and now a major success worldwide …

Eigth brothers that come from a family of traditional musicians, where beyond them, the sisters and their mother are singers and The father is The musician Phil Cohan, which has his roots in Mississippi. He lived in St. Louis in 40′s, being part of the whole musical culture of the time. In the 50′s he was a member of the legendary jazz band, Sun Ra in Chicago, and in 1960, when the band decided to move to the east coast, Phil decided to stay in the Windy City …

Mean while the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble were growing, the work of Phil as an activist and music educator has created a place called the Ark of the Sun in a warehouse behind the family home above a furniture store.

They used to go to bed, listening to there father rehearsal with his band Circle Of Sound and wake up at 6 am to study music before going to class (and apparently, his father used should be must be very rigid with the class!)

As young guys, listened to Public Enemy, Eazy-E, NWA a great reference for them and of great importance for the formation of the band … They came to form a group at the time when they were very young …

At the end of 90′s and after all of then had already finished their studies, decided to take all of the jazz and black music influences of there father plus all the passion for rap, and form the band. They touring around Chicago’s Train Stations …

The name came after a guy in a suit that had missed the train a few times, watched them play for hours and said, “Dude, you hypnotized me!” Out of blue, appeared the name Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

After that they decided to move to New York and record their first album in 2004.The Mesmerizing Band came touring alongside with Mos Def, Erykah Baduh, Aquilla Sadalla, Phil Cohran, The Recipe, Nomadic Massive, and Tony Allen at the North Sea Jazz Festival . In 2007 they recorded with Erykah Badu and Maxwell. There presentations trough Europe in 2005 were hot! Becoming the darlings of opinion formers on the old continent!

In 2009 they supported the band Blur  in two concerts at the Hyde Park. And in the final disk Plastic Dreams, Gorillaz collaborated on several tracks.

There are 11 recorded lps in 7 years of career, including CD-Rs, vinyl, cd, ep and compact 7.10 and 12 inch, and a live disc.

In my opinion, one of the most original and creative bands of recent times, long live the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble!
